AXN’s Blue Bloods Stunt Sets Pace for New Show!

If you were in Singapore’s main shopping belt, Orchard Road last Saturday and saw the thunder of a New York Police Department (NYPD) procession do not worry!

This unusual observation was the first procession of AXN, which has 26 cars in partnership with Harley Owners Group (Singapore Chapter) and regional exhibitions sponsor Chevrolet to promote the Blue Bloods, the new series of the chain of prime American police.

The on-the-ground motorcade stunt was the culmination of an extensive online and on-air campaign, featuring NYPD sightings across Asia reported by a fictitious AXN News Network (ANN). A series of on-air promos, first seeded on social media sites Facebook and Twitter, kicked off with ANN first reporting a spike in crime rates in New York City as a result of huge contingents of NYPD cops headed to Southeast Asia.

This was followed by other reports of ‘Men in Blue’ sightings in locations, such as Singapore’s Chinatown, Kuala Lumpur’s Petronas Twin Towers, Manila’s Makati City, and even Chevrolet showrooms – demonstrating the ingenious and seamless integration of a sponsor into an on-air promo. Sharp-eyed tourists and residents also submitted numerous videos of the ‘Men in Blue’.

A team of tall, strapping cops made their presence felt as they wandered along the busy thoroughfare giving out packets of tissue, to drive home the public service message that “it is time to clean up the streets”. The public, though initially perplexed, were soon posing for shots happily with the cops.

AXN, Southeast Asia’s No. 1 international general entertainment channel, is proud to be the first in Asia to premiere Blue Bloods on 21 February 2011. A drama about a multi-generational family of cops dedicated to New York City law enforcement, Blue Bloods marks multi-award winning Tom Selleck’s (Magnum P.I., Jesse Stone) return to primetime TV. The stellar cast of young and seasoned actors includes Donnie Wahlberg (Righteous Kill, Band of Brothers), Broadway luminary Len Cairou (Damages, The West Wing) and Bridget Moynahan.

Episodes saw Matt Le Blanc – Role as Drunken man-baby

Tonight’s episode was basically a half-hour Tamsin Greig makes her best notion of danger in search of antelope, including the odd ginger, Matt Le Blanc. Four episodes into episodes and I’m finding it difficult to come up with a more eloquent shows like “meh”.

Tonight’s installment saw filming begin on ‘Pucks!’ Beverly and Sean’s dry British comedy turned American gag-fest. Seeing a sitcom performed sans laughter track was weirdly uncanny and there was plenty of room to explore this further, yet five minutes in this plot strand is dropped in favour of the Sean-loves-Matt-Le-Blanc-Matt Le Blanc-hates-Beverly storyline.

The LA-worn couple’s marital banter is fast becoming tired and it is fact fall-guy Le Blanc who steals the show.

With his character in the grips of whiskey-fuelled inebriation for most of the episode the always-Friends star spits some spectacular pieces of profanity-laden venom. Look out for such Le Blanc classics as ‘Oh yeah I’m f***in’ full of whimsy!’, and the perfectly delivered line that somehow wins over his ex-wife, ‘c’mon, just once don’t be a c***.’

We find Sean however (played by the usually funny Stephen Mangan), in hot water with the missus for stepping on the old no-I-didn’t-mean-you-look-old-dear rake for what feels like the millionth time.

While Episodes invites us to laugh along with a couple of savvy Brits as they wade through the shallows of LA, it is the Yanks that get us laughing. It tells us not why British comedy does not translate to an American audience, but shows why US humour has made such a lasting impression in the UK.

A comedy episode is not horrible, but when it comes to the show is renewed for another series, can be just as well that did not call the stations.

'I Love You, Phillip Morris'

Movie review: ‘I Love You, Phillip Morris’

'I Love You, Phillip Morris'In “I Love You Phillip Morris,” Jim Carrey gets to show off the best of what he can do, both the physical comedy he made his name on and the unexpected tenderness that has crept into his later, more dramatic work. He uses that whole range to play a gay con man driven by love, giving a consistently charming, breezy performance in a film that frequently feels inconsistent in tone.

The directing debut of Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, who wrote the awesomely inappropriate “Bad Santa,” veers a bit jarringly between its humorous, serious and romantic moments. But Carrey, as real-life scam artist Steven Russell, is never short of fascinating to watch. The story is so incredible, you’re constantly wondering what outlandish scheme he’ll perpetrate next. (A quick intro to the film assures us: “This really happened. It really did.”)

Ficarra and Requa’s script, based on the book by former Houston Chronicle investigative reporter Steven McVicker, follows Steven Russell’s many creative efforts to procure money, then break out of jail each time he’s caught. During one of his stints behind bars, he meets the true love of his life: a sweet, soft-spoken pretty boy named Phillip Morris, whom Ewan McGregor plays with great delicacy and heart.

Carrey and McGregor are awfully cute together, and one of the great strengths of “I Love You Phillip Morris” is the matter-of-fact way it handles their relationship; it’s never precious or mawkish, and frequently the humor between them is quite raunchy.

Country Strong

MOVIE REVIEW: Country Strong

Country StrongThis is the worst movie of the year. Sure, the year just started a week ago, but it’ll be on the list at the end of the year, rest assured.

I thought I’d refrain from revealing the ending, or anything that happens late in the movie, in case people want to waste their money on this piece of garbage. This will also keep me from writing a review that lists 100 things wrong with the film.

The movie starts well enough with a young, good looking up-and-coming country singer (played well by Garrett Hedlund, last seen in Tron Legacy). He’s in a tiny bar but tells a funny story about a song he played for his mom. The crowd seems happy and so does he.

We quickly see him in a rehab facility with Gwyneth Paltrow. They have a bit of chemistry as they work on a song together. When her husband and manager, played by country singer Tim McGraw (who played Hedlund’s father in Friday Night Lights), comes in – this is the start of where the script goes downhill (and the first of many scenes where you wonder why people don’t lock doors).

McGraw is rude to Hedlund, who is acting as her sponsor/drug counselor. He asks for a bellhop to carry the bags to the car, and then barks that Hedlund should do this. Oh, and he’s taking her out of rehab 30 days early, which everyone advises against (wonder where that’s going to lead?).

McGraw tells Paltrow that he’s looking at a former beauty queen to open shows. She, of course, wants Hedlund. In a great coincidence, when he goes to hear her sing, she tanks on stage. Hedlund does well.

Hedlund and the beauty queen fight like little girls backstage, yet he comes to the stage and rescues her with a duet. McGraw tells him he should open with her. He says no because … I’m guessing most singers in dive bars who are playing for free beer and little money turn down an opening slot for a national act that would bring them a nice paycheck, and fame and fortune.

He ends up doing the tour (did you really have to wonder if he would take it?).

Oh, and for some reason, Paltrow carries around a baby bird she found in a forest. This means that everywhere McGraw goes (including a smoky bar to hear singers) he has to carry the bird in a cigar box.

The couple goes to bed and we see they are in a passionless marriage. Yet, when she gets upset as they lay there, he tells a story about the first time he heard her sing and “although I’m not a religious guy, I thought it was an angel singing.” She smiles and says, “I love that story.”

Problem is, there was no story. He didn’t explain where he heard her singing or give any details. He just said how he felt when he heard her. How about we hear the story, so maybe we can get background on characters and possibly root for them? I’m guessing it wouldn’t matter, as you end up hating everyone in this movie – even characters you’re supposed to like. There’s really no one in the movie I rooted for, aside from the baby bird.

There’s a scene where Paltrow is getting onto the tour bus, and the beauty queen approaches to ask for a signed CD and tell her how much she idolizes her and how thrilled she is. She even says the tour bus looks so nice she won’t even sit on the toilet. McGraw then has to say, “You think this is for you?” before getting on and slamming the door. She looks back and sees a ratty van that she’ll be crammed in with eight band members.

There was one clever line in the movie, and it happened at the 28-minute mark. As Paltrow is taking pills, her “sponsor” questions it. She replies “I’m just taking what’s in the square.” He replies, “It’s a big square.” She smiles and says, “I have big problems.”

Kinda clever, until … McGraw tells the guy to mind his own business and that, “if she stays away from alcohol, the pills are fine.”

The first concert is a complete disaster, as Paltrow is drunk on stage. And in a performance that many thought would garner Oscar buzz, it was actually embarrassing. In fact, her entire performance in this is just awful, right down to the pouty faces and crying. I’m guessing she might get a Razzie award.

If I were to say what I enjoyed about the movie, it would be that the songs weren’t that bad. And, there was a scene where Paltrow visits a sick child at school that’s adorable and very well written.

Another scene has a drunken Paltrow on a bar, singing “Keep on Smiling” with a bunch of bikers. It wasn’t a good scene, but I haven’t heard that great Wet Willie song in 20 years, so that was kinda cool.

A better movie could’ve been made by taking a story from a country song – the guy losing the girl, losing his double-wide, his dog dying, his only friend being Jack … Jack Daniels.

I didn’t mind that this theme has been done to death. That was my mindset when I saw Crazy Heart last year, but it surprised me by being a good movie.

You don’t have to be original. You do have to make a decent film. This hits too many wrong notes to even come close to being worth a trip to the movies.

Amber Portwood

“Teen Mother” Star Amber Port Wood Hopes Will Eventually Disappear Reputation

Amber PortwoodAmber Portwood is apparently a believer that any publicity is necessarily good publicity. "I could get the attention, but is not an accurate observation," Teen star mother told TMZ on Monday.

Although 20-year-old from Anderson, IN, has acquired the reputation of the MTV show, said he did not want the name of “teenage mother” captured with him as long as he remains in the public eye.

“I think that [MTV's] fine to me, but I’m older now and the whole thing. So, it’s turned into — Teen Mom — I turned 20 and I don’t want to be known as Amber from Teen Mom,” Portwood explained.

“When it’s all done and over with because, MTV is not going to be here forever and I know that.”

Portwood may view her “teen mom” reputation negatively, but the fame she has gained from being a reality TV star has also brought her fortune. She previously admitted she makes $140,000 for a six-month contract with MTV for filming the show, but Portwood apparently believes the salary is not a significant amount.

“I don’t know — I don’t make a major amount of money — I don’t think I’m a celebrity,” Portwood said.

While Teen Mom star has recently made many headlines — including her recent arrest on charges she assaulted ex-fiance Gary Shirley, the father of her two-year-old daughter Leah, Portwood said her struggles have only made her stronger and wiser.

“I’ve learned my lesson I promise you that. I did therapy for eight months now — anger management — everything,” Portwood claimed.

In addition, the reality TV star said much of her recovery from the drama of her relationship with Shirley was self-motivated.

“[Therapy's] a personal choice though — so that it never happens again — make sure that I have self control. It was never a court order. It wasn’t anything. That was personally my decision to go to therapy and go to a psychiatrist. I did two things,” Portwood asserted.

Portwood also said she believes her 24-hour hold in jail before she was released on $5,000 bail was a horrible experience but taught her a valuable life lesson in that her punishment could have been worse.

“The whole time I was there, the only thing that really made me feel like – I was right – when I keep thinking”, these girls are here for many years, months, and I’m here 24 hours.’ And I learned with 24 hours in jail was ‘. Think about what you have lived -. What they have learned that there is ‘; So, I can not complain, but it was not good at all. It was horrible,” Portwood said.

MTV Takes The Abortion Debate With New Doc

16 and Pregnant“16 and Pregnant” and “Teen Mother” gave us an inside look at how to deal with the difficulties that young mothers are accompanied by a child who is a child. And now, MTV is looking for the other side of an unplanned pregnancy, and the fight against abortion.

“No Easy Decision” will follow one former “16 and pregnant” theme called Markai who are considering this option when you get pregnant a second time, EW reported.

The special also feature Dr. Drew, who will speak with young women who terminated their own pregnancy and why they decided to go that route. MTV plans to bring all sides of the issue to light including the why contraception is vital as well as what happens to women who go through this.

“No Easy Decision” will premiere on MTV on 28th Dec at 11:30 p.m. Although this could be depressed during the holidays, should be at least as interesting as the drama of what you are going for that day.

Chronicles of Narnia

The Chronicles of Narnia – Movie Review

Chronicles of NarniaWhile the “Chronicles of Narnia” series was great fun at a superficial level, there has never accused of having a large emotional depth. They tease you with visions of great battles fought for great causes, but rarely deliver. You know that these children will never get hurt, let alone die, while none of the films have any real drama that permeates the “Harry Potter” movies.

“The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Tread” apparently brings this series to a close up, but I do not think that was his stated intention. Saved by a vibrant ending a battle with a hideous sea monster (think “out the Kraken” this year, “Clash of the Titans”), limping the rest of the movie and a nice harmless way.

Given the listless performances by the two principal characters, Georgie Henley and Skander Keynes as Lucy and Edmund, it is a minor miracle that the three “Narnia” films have generated the box office receipts that they have. While we are obviously supposed to root for them, they generate little reason to do so other than the fact that they are too cute to die. Preteens like my grandchildren like these films although even they do not find them memorable.

And while I am speaking of my grandchildren, I want to thank my granddaughter, Calen (age 9), for giving me the greatest Christmas gift a movie loving grandfather could receive, namely that she went to see the God awful “Yogi Bear” without me! Such a thoughtful gesture has to be met with an appropriate gift this Christmas morning.

But I must say that the most recent “Narnia” film does have a few rewards, the principal one being a spunky performance by Will Poulter as Eustace, the Pevensie siblings’ cranky young cousin. Eustace is an aggravating nuisance that breathes some needed life into this film, particularly when he mutates into a dragon that helps save the day.

As young Mr. Poulter displayed in the wonderful Indy movie “Son of Rambow” (2007), he has some clever comic timing. One can only hope that he is the centerpiece of any future “Narnia” movies should the producers try to squeeze a few more dollars out of the American market.

Another bright spot in the film comes from Simon Pegg, who provides the voice for the witty, never say die mouse, Reepicheep. It is a telling comment about ”Narnia” that most of the meaningful emotional moments come from the interaction of a digitally created mouse and the dragon that he befriends.

Mr. Pegg is a very funny actor, be it only to use his voice as an actor here, or a wonderfully bitter parodies “Shaun of the Dead” (2004) and “Hot Fuzz” (2007). Thanks to him, Poulter young people and carry out the director Michael Apted ‘Narnia’ more or less together as if it limps to its inevitable conclusion Penvensie children return home. Regardless, just like the “Transformers” film, of course, is staggering on its feet last year, and I think that Hollywood would be good to let it rest in peace.
