In anticipation of significant growth in mobile TV and online, reports Shaw Global Media Video App already available to the IPAD, is now available for iPhone and iPod Touch.

Global offers wireless access to the full-length television programs in prime time, the first of its kind in the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.

And, as Paul Burns, Director of Digital Media, says the company is ready to develop other portable media platforms.

“Along with other mobile development shops, we’re looking at Android, Windows Phone 7 and BlackBerry,” Burns told Mediacaster Magazine. “The app game is a game of scale; who can we actually reach, from an audience perspective, with each device? As the devices get better, the options for content providers get better too,” he said. “The more devices that nail the user experience, the more attractive it is for developers.”

In the case of iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch devices, the potential reach is certainly a large group.

Offering full-length episodes of top TV shows won’t hurt.

“It is unique, yes – we are officially the first Canadian broadcaster to launch an iPhone iPod Touch version with full episodes like this, and we’re really proud of that,” he stated, adding that while the two apps offer that same content, the feature set and user experience were uniquely optimized for the iPad device or iPhone iPod touch.

Burns sees the app as an alternative way for users to keep connected to the content, not a replacement for TV viewing.

“We do not see these as something trying to take away from our audience, rather as a catch-up vehicle,” he said, explaining that the app allows users to stop and start viewing of a program on the same device, taking advantage of a built-in memory or history function.

Not only are complete shows and episodes available, in as high a quality as the device and the connection will support, the ad breaks are the same, for the most part, as on TV.

The app does includes sponsorship integration, which may appear on the start-up screen (while the application loads) and as a small icon on the left side of the control tab bar, the company describes, and video ads may play before, during, and after video playback.

Burns says that there is a “slightly lower ad load” for the mobile app now, as new and engaging ways to increase the ad exposure are developed.

“The knee-jerk response would be to flick the switch and have same ad parity,” he notes. “It seems good idea, until you learn that there’s some deterioration in the user experience. There needs to be a good balance between monetization and overall user experience. It’s an evolution; we love ads in the program, to keep the revenue churning, and we are looking at ways to make the experience more impactful for advertisers.”

He explains that geo-location and specific ad targeting is in the toolkit now, and the apps allow for such specificity and interactivity.

It’s that ‘lean forward, lean back’ metaphor for the engagement levels of home bound TV viewers, versus on the go mobile users and the degree of brand recall and product awareness that’s created with different ad valuations.

Nevertheless, Burns says that at the end of the day, it’s about content. “The app is a shell for superior content. Despite all the design, development testing and quality assurance work that went into the app, at the core, the content is everything, he underscores.

“We obsess over every pixel.”

Both the app and the web portal use an adaptive streaming technology to make the best use of available bandwidth, be it 3G or Wi-Fi.

All content is streamed; there is no option to save or store content locally.

The Global Video App offers access the network’s library of premium content, including full episodes of House, The Good Wife, NCIS: LA, The Office, Rookie Blue and Survivor along with previous broadcasts of Global National and 16:9:The Bigger Picture.

The content offering mirrors that of Global’s online offering with the exception of Fox content (including Glee, Bones and other Fox shows, due to international licensing agreements.

More content is anticipated as negotiations continue, and as usage grows.

SyFy of Being Human is a gift for editing, and slide opening episode last night “It takes two to do something Go Wrong” reminded us that the ogres at least when it comes to Boston three roommates are not so different from humans. We breathe the same air, we are obsessed with things large and small, and we live in fear of what we can do and what we can do for us. But there is something else we have in common: Life can really treat us like crap sometimes.

By the last part of the episode, the whole thing was so far down the emotions of sizes up to Josh, who was just getting caught before he was bloodied and beaten up his sister came to the door jam-packed giant. His beat-down had an immediate impact on the irresponsibility of Aidan, who abandoned him at a bar / club in favor of playing tonsil tennis, Rebecca, who appears to depend on just about everything. Rule number one, Aidan: Do not leave your friend’s sister unattended, especially in a place like Boston!  Sheesh!

And Sally … is there anyone else on TV right now that you feel most sorry for? Hence it is, most often on the stairs to problems Aidan and Josh look like mosquito bites. All in all, it was another fine episode of Being Human, but one thing I’m having a problem with is the characters’ conflicts. Sally, Josh, and Aidan all have oodles and oodles of troubles, but their strife is pretty much confined to external sources and almost nonexistent with each other. It’d be nice to see the roommates butt heads a bit more, and that may very well happen next week, when Josh finds out that Aidan was nowhere to be found while his sister was getting the tar smacked out of her.

The series is also developing its own animal, with different histories of the original British adaptation more than ever. (It’s been a while since I saw the British version, but this episode seems to be the most diverse of the bunch so far). Those of you who have left the program after the first episode because it seemed like a copy may want to dive again that even more changes are planned for the second half of the season.

Amber Portwood is apparently a believer that any publicity is necessarily good publicity. "I could get the attention, but is not an accurate observation," Teen star mother told TMZ on Monday.

“When it’s all done and over with because, MTV is not going to be here forever and I know that.”

Portwood may view her “teen mom” reputation negatively, but the fame she has gained from being a reality TV star has also brought her fortune. She previously admitted she makes $140,000 for a six-month contract with MTV for filming the show, but Portwood apparently believes the salary is not a significant amount.

“I don’t know — I don’t make a major amount of money — I don’t think I’m a celebrity,” Portwood said.

While Teen Mom star has recently made many headlines — including her recent arrest on charges she assaulted ex-fiance Gary Shirley, the father of her two-year-old daughter Leah, Portwood said her struggles have only made her stronger and wiser.

“I’ve learned my lesson I promise you that. I did therapy for eight months now — anger management — everything,” Portwood claimed.

In addition, the reality TV star said much of her recovery from the drama of her relationship with Shirley was self-motivated.

“[Therapy's] a personal choice though — so that it never happens again — make sure that I have self control. It was never a court order. It wasn’t anything. That was personally my decision to go to therapy and go to a psychiatrist. I did two things,” Portwood asserted.

Portwood also said she believes her 24-hour hold in jail before she was released on $5,000 bail was a horrible experience but taught her a valuable life lesson in that her punishment could have been worse.

“The whole time I was there, the only thing that really made me feel like – I was right – when I keep thinking”, these girls are here for many years, months, and I’m here 24 hours.’ And I learned with 24 hours in jail was ‘. Controversial reality TV star Amber Portwood was allowed access to his daughter after domestic violence arrest last week.

Critics have been decrying the inventive decline of Hollywood pretty much since D.W. Griffith left the scene. “It’s just that the most sophisticated stuff is showing up on TV screens”, Edward Jay Epstein says.

Epstein tells NPR’s Guy Raz,”We’ve had a role reversal”. “Now, people go to television, especially pay television and premiere cable television, to watch their favorite programs like Mad Men and Boardwalk Empire and Damages. And they go to movies to see comic books: Spiderman, Batman, Superman and Avatar.”

Epstein wrote the book The Hollywood Economist: the Hidden Financial Reality behind the Movies. He says the dichotomy in Hollywood these days is a product of fundamentally different business realities between the big and small screens.

“The movie business is basically driven by marketing departments that have only one audience that they can guarantee to turn out on Friday and Saturday nights,” he says. “And that audience is teenagers and youth.

“Television, on the other hand, especially pay television, runs on a completely different business model. They have to stop people from canceling their subscriptions. So they have to reach the head of the household, who pays the bills. … So they have basically put more and more money into original programming to keep the adult audience paying the bill.”

The fundamental mission of a network like HBO — which pioneered original dramas on cable with The Sopranos, The Wire and now Boardwalk Empire — isn’t to make “art” or even to build viewer numbers.

“According to the top HBO executive ” Epstein says, “that they would rather have a program that had very low viewership but highest critical acclaim, especially in The New York Times and elite media, because when people read those kind of stories about The Sopranos or The Wire, their reaction is, ‘We cannot give this up!’ “
