Julian Schnabel: ‘Miral’ is Now Shorter, More Appealing

As he collects some pressure if necessary on a selection of controversy within the United Nations, Julian Schnabel Palestinian drama “Miral” also seeks to pause for another reason: The film is different from that criticism and experienced journalists in the fall.

Initially conceived as a contender press in December 2010 and prices, personal history-as-politics has been quickly in trouble when he played at festivals in Venice and Toronto film was a mechanical test that has not received very good critical.

Writing in Variety in September, Justin Chang noted that “Schnabel’s signature blend of splintered storytelling and sobering humanism feels misapplied to this sweeping multi-generational saga of four Arab women living under Israeli occupation, the youngest of which, Miral, emerges a bland totem of hope rather than a compelling movie subject … at a certain point, the characters begin speaking almost exclusively in soundbites.” The Guardian later said that the film had gotten itself into a “terrible muddle” with its focus on disparate characters.

“Miral’s” U.S. release date was pushed back as distributor the Weinstein Co. focused on its other award contenders. The Freida Pinto-starring film is now coming out in the relative quiet of March, opening in limited release next weekend.

Schnabel says the movie that will play theaters is not the same movie that pundits judged in the fall. The director tells 24 Frames that his political tale — which is based on the coming-of-age memoir of girlfriend Rula Jebreal –  is now a full 13 minutes shorter, which takes it from nearly two hours to 1 hour and 39 minutes.

Gone is the archival footage of post-Oslo Accord celebrations from the end of a film, as well a funeral at the movie’s opening that sets the tone for one of the film’s key subjects. “It stays more with the characters instead of the topic,” Schnabel said.

A film can sometimes contract as it moves from festival to commercial theater, although a cut of 13 minutes is decidedly on the larger end of the spectrum. (The director said he collaborated with Harvey Weinstein, who is known for a proactive approach in the editing room, in making the trims. “He has excellent ideas, and I tried some different things,” Schnabel said.)

Without singling anyone out, Schnabel said that he was irked by the early coverage, some of which pondered the idea of an Indian actress playing a Palestinian character. “I read some pretty stupid reviews, where people said silly things about Freida,” Schnabel said. “If you saw her and Rula, they could be sisters.”

Schnabel said that the critical ambivalence paved for him, “Nice comments from people I respect”, as the Board of Directors of Jonathan Demme, Milos Forman and Bernardo Bertolucci.

Being Human Breaks Away From the Original

SyFy of Being Human is a gift for editing, and slide opening episode last night “It takes two to do something Go Wrong” reminded us that the ogres at least when it comes to Boston three roommates are not so different from humans. We breathe the same air, we are obsessed with things large and small, and we live in fear of what we can do and what we can do for us. But there is something else we have in common: Life can really treat us like crap sometimes.

By the last part of the episode, the whole thing was so far down the emotions of sizes up to Josh, who was just getting caught before he was bloodied and beaten up his sister came to the door jam-packed giant. His beat-down had an immediate impact on the irresponsibility of Aidan, who abandoned him at a bar / club in favor of playing tonsil tennis, Rebecca, who appears to depend on just about everything. Rule number one, Aidan: Do not leave your friend’s sister unattended, especially in a place like Boston!  Sheesh!

And Sally … is there anyone else on TV right now that you feel most sorry for? Hence it is, most often on the stairs to problems Aidan and Josh look like mosquito bites. She is an undead San Andreas Fault, to keep things shaking while her ex-fiancé left for murder. But everything can change for her soon because she is learning to use his powers, and when she can, I hope she makes Danny’s head explode.

All in all, it was another fine episode of Being Human, but one thing I’m having a problem with is the characters’ conflicts. Sally, Josh, and Aidan all have oodles and oodles of troubles, but their strife is pretty much confined to external sources and almost nonexistent with each other. It’d be nice to see the roommates butt heads a bit more, and that may very well happen next week, when Josh finds out that Aidan was nowhere to be found while his sister was getting the tar smacked out of her.

The series is also developing its own animal, with different histories of the original British adaptation more than ever. (It’s been a while since I saw the British version, but this episode seems to be the most diverse of the bunch so far). Those of you who have left the program after the first episode because it seemed like a copy may want to dive again that even more changes are planned for the second half of the season.

China Orders Smoking Curtailed In Movies

You may have observed the MPAA also started smoking in their reasons for the rating. Turmoil surrounding the decision slightly faded, especially because smoking is now twenty percent of the offensive to the American public as drunk driving, but a lot of other countries where smoking is more common, this is still a hot button issue.

No country in the world, buys more cigarettes than China, and after a new study, Chinese children are more likely to smoke after seeing the movie stars do, the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television has decided to fix the law.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, movies will no longer be allowed to depict minors smoking or buying tobacco products, as well as anyone lighting anywhere smoking is banned. This includes all public buildings and will probably be the sorriest point of contention for filmmakers.

That being said, movies are supposed to, for the most part, glorify realism, and if you can’t smoke in certain places, films should depict that, or at least implement consequences if characters do. As to whether or not it’s realistic for minors not to light up, it probably isn’t, but as long as surveys showing it influences children are released, decisions like this will continue.

Now it just remains to be seen whether this will be implemented or even how long it lasts. Tobacco is big business in China, and more than seventy-five billion was paid in taxes by the state run smoking industry.

This is a serious lobbying and is unlikely to be pleased with this development. No word on if this will affect foreign films, but with the Chinese market continues to grow, Hollywood will be forced to take notice.

Viking Wrestlers Become Focus of MTV Documentary

It takes focus, commitment and determination is a fighter and Viking in the last 24 years, Coach Brent Barnes has helped hundreds of young men in the mold of adult men and successful movement through the program in Lake Stevens High School wrestling.

While many students can attest to the success of the program, both on and off the mat, a former student was able to use his influence in Hollywood to tell the world what a wonderful program we have here in our beautiful city.

Lake Stevens’ own Chris Pratt, best known for his television roles on “Ever wood”, “The OC” and his current role in which he plays Andy Dwyer on NBC’s “Parks & Rec,” has been instrumental in the creation of an upcoming MTV documentary about the Viking wrestling team and what drives them to be one of the best teams around.

Pratt was himself a Viking Wrestler, or Berserker, as they call themselves, almost 15 years ago and was coached by Barnes. The two have remained friends and came up with the idea together.

“Former student and wrestler Chris Pratt and I had talked about how cool it would be to do something like this. As he became more successful and started to get connected to the right people in Hollywood he finally felt comfortable writing a pitch,” Barnes said. “Originally it was pitched as a series show but now with the type of footage they have and the nature of it they believe it will be a documentary.”

Pratt began his quest to sell the idea in Hollywood and after talking to MTV they agreed to take on the project. “About a year ago I started pitching the idea around Hollywood to see if I could rise some funding and get some money. I.ma huge fan of documentaries and because MTV is the network that’s financing, people is assuming that it’s going to be a reality show. There’s a big distinction between contrived reality and actual reality,” Pratt said. “My goal is to put Lake Stevens on the map.”

The transition from student/wrestler to ‘star’ with camera crews following their every move, has been easy for most of the team, however, sometimes repeating simple movements gets bothersome.

“At first it was distracting but they (the wrestlers) have gotten used to it and now they don’t pay much attention to them,” Barnes explained.

Eric Soler, a top ranked wrestler from Lake Stevens, has enjoyed the experience but it does take a little getting used to. “My experience with the MTV camera crew following me around is pretty good they are really good guys but sometimes it gets annoying. We get a lot of attention from it and get asked a lot of questions by bystanders which is sometimes very annoying but dealing with it will be worth it when the world gets to see what wrestling is really about and what we are about as a team and individuals,” Soler said. “The most annoying part about having them follow us around is they make you repeat some of the things you do A LOT which is sometimes very annoying like earlier today me and a couple of teammates walked out of Safeway and they didn’t get it on film so we had to walk back and then do the same thing over again.”

MTV Producer Alex Ko is part of the crew who has been following the wrestlers for the past two and half months. Watching all that this team does to prepare for matches and also the way the fit a normal life into their schedules has been interesting, Ko said.

“As an individual I don’t think the film crew has really changed the way I prepare for a match whether it’s different for some of the others on the team I am unsure of. But Coach Barnes always tells us to have consistency in our preparation so I just try to stick to that rule and prepare myself the same before every match,” Soler said.

Barnes is a big influence in how these kids are turning out in the world and Pratt knows firsthand what Barnes’ coaching can do for you.

“I know that my life was greatly changed under the tutelage of Brent Barnes and going through his program. I would like people to see what happen to these boys and how their character changes and how they grow from a boy to a man, Pratt said.

For now, the Vikings are preparing for the State Finals in Tacoma this weekend and Pratt has been part of the drills this past week after an injury on the team. He encourages everyone to support them in Tacoma.

“I’ve been here the last week or so with them,” he said. “If you get a chance – came to the Tacoma Dome and see Come see who are the most difficult child in the state is supporting your berserkers.”The second part of the series will be published in the Journal of Lake Stevens next week.

AXN’s Blue Bloods Stunt Sets Pace for New Show!

If you were in Singapore’s main shopping belt, Orchard Road last Saturday and saw the thunder of a New York Police Department (NYPD) procession do not worry!

This unusual observation was the first procession of AXN, which has 26 cars in partnership with Harley Owners Group (Singapore Chapter) and regional exhibitions sponsor Chevrolet to promote the Blue Bloods, the new series of the chain of prime American police.

The on-the-ground motorcade stunt was the culmination of an extensive online and on-air campaign, featuring NYPD sightings across Asia reported by a fictitious AXN News Network (ANN). A series of on-air promos, first seeded on social media sites Facebook and Twitter, kicked off with ANN first reporting a spike in crime rates in New York City as a result of huge contingents of NYPD cops headed to Southeast Asia.

This was followed by other reports of ‘Men in Blue’ sightings in locations, such as Singapore’s Chinatown, Kuala Lumpur’s Petronas Twin Towers, Manila’s Makati City, and even Chevrolet showrooms – demonstrating the ingenious and seamless integration of a sponsor into an on-air promo. Sharp-eyed tourists and residents also submitted numerous videos of the ‘Men in Blue’.

A team of tall, strapping cops made their presence felt as they wandered along the busy thoroughfare giving out packets of tissue, to drive home the public service message that “it is time to clean up the streets”. The public, though initially perplexed, were soon posing for shots happily with the cops.

AXN, Southeast Asia’s No. 1 international general entertainment channel, is proud to be the first in Asia to premiere Blue Bloods on 21 February 2011. A drama about a multi-generational family of cops dedicated to New York City law enforcement, Blue Bloods marks multi-award winning Tom Selleck’s (Magnum P.I., Jesse Stone) return to primetime TV. The stellar cast of young and seasoned actors includes Donnie Wahlberg (Righteous Kill, Band of Brothers), Broadway luminary Len Cairou (Damages, The West Wing) and Bridget Moynahan.

Movie Review: Sanctum

In short, Sanctum is a film about survival. Indeed, survival is the outer shell, the shell and core film. Sure, there are a couple of character strings to float throughout the film, but most of them end abruptly with the death of every character, and the only one who does all his conflict is resolved with the other characters are just dying or dead. This is not a spoiler, because the plot is very easy to predict.

Yet even if the public can easily see all the major sites in ten miles away from them, this works. Estranged father and son are being discussed most of the film? Check. Inevitably, father and son reconciliation? Check. Other members of the expedition, which could also be wearing an “I killed 3 … 2 … 1 …” t-shirt? Check. I’m sorry to ruin this, but none of these are really spoilers, Sanctum is followed by one of the oldest history books and stereotyped.

But since this is the first James Cameron-produced movie since Avatar, no one is probably going to see Sanctum for its plot. Most viewers will probably be more interested to hear how well the suspense and the 3D effects work. The moment-to-moment suspense works well to distract the viewer from the predictable plot and archetypical characters. The movie is also bright enough to know when to inject a brief moment of calm into the action so that the audience has something to compare the suspenseful action to. The action itself starts early on in the film and does not let up until much later, as the characters struggle to survive in a large and complex cave system that is flooding rapidly thanks to a cyclone.

So far so standard, but since this is a James Cameron film, the 3D effects turn into the elephant in the room; nagging the reviewer to mention them. As much innovation as you put into 3D filming, Mr. Cameron, it seems like you have lost a bit of the thread of what the technology is perfectly suited for: fantasy and science fiction. To be fair, the 3D is used in the exact same way and just as well as it was in Avatar, but it doesn’t quite mesh as well with the comparatively mundane setting that Sanctum has: a big cave. Granted, it was a very pretty cave, but at the end of the day, it was still just a big hole in the ground. And a big hole in the ground simply cannot hope to compete with Avatar’s fantastical moon-world, Pandora.

Which leaves this review with the writing, acting, and the soundtrack?  Overall, the writing, while never original or impressive, is at least competent; the characters are consistent, the dialogue suits the action and characters well enough. In fact, the only significant strike against the writing is that it seems like whoever wrote the screenplay was phoning it in somewhat; as evidenced by the blurb at the beginning reading “this film was inspired by true events;” by ‘inspired’ they mean ‘copied’ and by ‘true events’ they mean ‘a crazy story some guy told us.’ The actors do their parts well; even Ioan Gruffard, who comic book fans will remember for helping to butcher the Fantastic Four in their film adaptations as Mr. Fantastic. Lastly, the soundtrack mirrored the film’s overall quality: competent but bland.

If you happen to be a fan of films of survival or work of James Cameron, so you can check. 3D effects are used in a responsible and mature, but they can’t really add much to the film. Writing, acting, music, and overall the plot is passable. Do not go to the Sanctum expect a great story. Do not go to the Sanctum expects a fantastic soundtrack. Certainly not going to wait for the next Sanctum Avatar. What you can expect from Sanctum are some great special effects, written authority, and a good action thriller. As mentioned earlier in this review, Sanctum is competent but bland. Or, in other words, it’s a popcorn movie, quite edible, but it’s not going to imprison someone.

Episodes saw Matt Le Blanc – Role as Drunken man-baby

Tonight’s episode was basically a half-hour Tamsin Greig makes her best notion of danger in search of antelope, including the odd ginger, Matt Le Blanc. Four episodes into episodes and I’m finding it difficult to come up with a more eloquent shows like “meh”.

Tonight’s installment saw filming begin on ‘Pucks!’ Beverly and Sean’s dry British comedy turned American gag-fest. Seeing a sitcom performed sans laughter track was weirdly uncanny and there was plenty of room to explore this further, yet five minutes in this plot strand is dropped in favour of the Sean-loves-Matt-Le-Blanc-Matt Le Blanc-hates-Beverly storyline.

The LA-worn couple’s marital banter is fast becoming tired and it is fact fall-guy Le Blanc who steals the show.

With his character in the grips of whiskey-fuelled inebriation for most of the episode the always-Friends star spits some spectacular pieces of profanity-laden venom. Look out for such Le Blanc classics as ‘Oh yeah I’m f***in’ full of whimsy!’, and the perfectly delivered line that somehow wins over his ex-wife, ‘c’mon, just once don’t be a c***.’

We find Sean however (played by the usually funny Stephen Mangan), in hot water with the missus for stepping on the old no-I-didn’t-mean-you-look-old-dear rake for what feels like the millionth time.

While Episodes invites us to laugh along with a couple of savvy Brits as they wade through the shallows of LA, it is the Yanks that get us laughing. It tells us not why British comedy does not translate to an American audience, but shows why US humour has made such a lasting impression in the UK.

A comedy episode is not horrible, but when it comes to the show is renewed for another series, can be just as well that did not call the stations.
